Curtain measuring guide
Finding the right fit for your windows brings a quiet sense of ease to a room. When curtains are accurately measured and hang naturally they offer warmth, privacy and a softly finished space. This simple guide walks you through measuring your curtain width and drop with confidence.
Everything you will need
Before you begin gathering your measurements make sure you have a few simple tools ready:
- A measuring tape.
- A notepad and pencil.
-
A step ladder to reach higher spots.
Step 1: How to measure curtain width
Measuring your curtain width is the best place to start.
- Measure the full length of your curtain pole or track.
- Do not include any decorative finials on your pole measurement.
- Measure twice to ensure accuracy and write down your figure.
- Choose the width that matches most closely, moving up a size if you would like a fuller look.
- Yard curtains are designed to offer a natural gather across standard sizes including 117cm, 168cm and 229cm.
Step 2: Mastering curtain length and drop
Curtain drop refers to the total length from top to bottom. Your starting point depends on your chosen heading type:
- For pencil pleat curtains start measuring from the top of your track or the eye of your curtain rings.
- For eyelet curtains start measuring from the top of the pole.
Choose your preferred drop style:
- Sill-length curtains sit about 1cm above or 15cm below the window sill, keeping clear of radiators and everyday dust.
- Floor-length curtains drop to about 1cm above the floor for a clean and considered finish.
- Pooled curtains rest naturally on the floor by adding 5cm to 10cm onto your floor-length measurement for a soft and luxurious look.
- Take three drop measurements across your window space (from the middle and both ends) and use the correct length from standard options like 137cm, 183cm or 229cm.

Common measuring questions
- What if I do not have a pole or track installed yet? Simply measure the width of your window and add 15cm to either side for brackets and finials. For length start 15cm above the window frame.
- How do I measure a bay window? Measure each straight section of the custom track individually and add the widths together, then measure the drop as normal for each section.
